SURROUNDING
ALTO MONFERRATO
Exiting the tollgate of Ovada, and about an hour’s trip from Milan, Turin and Genoa, and not far from the French and Swiss borders, is the province of Alessandria, one of the central cultural, artistic and gastronomic areas of Piedmont.

In the various communes of Alessandria, the calendar for August, September and October is full of spectacles and gourmet wine gatherings for wine, truffles and chestnuts.

For enthusiasts of the outdoors, there is the Nature Park Capanne di Marcarolo where itineraries may be taken by bike, quad or on horseback. 
For anyone who wishes to learn horse-riding in the Ovada zone, there are excellent riding schools which will certainly meet your needs.

TAGLIOLO CASTLE
The austere presence of the Castle dominates this town in Ovada. The oldest part of the castle is the square tower which goes back to the 10th century, used once as a viewing point for the Saracen invasions. The visitor, in particular, will want to linger in the castle’s great wine cellar, where the excellent wines produced from the vineyards of the Marquis were produced and stored.

THE GAVI FORT
The Fort dwarfs the town. The vast, complex edifice is the result of numerous additions made in various epochs of its history. Inside, several buildings stand on different levels, which were used at the time to accommodate troops. A square tower remains from the castle, going back to the fifteenth century, and visible from within.

TRISOBBIO CASTLE
The Castle, originating in the 13th century, was radically restored during the 19th century. Situated at the summit of the hill in the residential zone, it has elegant double lancet windows and a high battlemented tower. The castle accommodates a restaurant and hotel. The visit includes the tower, the garden and the interior areas, as far as this is permitted by existing restaurant activities.

MALASPINA CASTLE
The Malaspina Grimaldi Castle at Roccagrimalda was built on a rock overlooking the Orba river, the castle was subject to alterations over the centuries. Transformed into a residence, it gained its present appearance when the Grimaldi built the western wing, at the base of which a charming chapel can be seen, ornamented with trompe l’oeil architecture. The historic park is well worth a visit, now that significant restoration is now complete.

PRASCO CASTLE
Going back to the 12th century, this castle has three semicircular towers and a central structure arranged around hanging gardens; one can still recognise the rooms once reserved for residence of the feudatory, and the areas earmarked for public functions.  In the park you can visit a snow-house from the 17th century. The Castle accommodates the centre for the Promotion of Studies on Giorgio Gallesio.

MORSASCO CASTLE
The Castle, mentioned from the 13th century onwards, belonged to the Malaspina, Gonzaga, Centurione and Pallavicino families. Of great strategic importance, it gradually lost its military features over the centuries and today is a seigneurial residence with its large halls and attractive rooms. One notable feature of great beauty is the historical tennis room. At the entrance is a park which opens out into the hills of the Monferrato region.

MORBELLO CASTLE
The Castle goes back to the 12th century and was owned by many different families: Aleramo, Del Bosco, Malaspina, Guala-Beccaria, Spinola, Pallavicino. Today it is the seat of a medieval cultural association, the Limes Vitae, which organises free visits with figures in historical costumes from the relevant epoch, on the first Sunday of each month from April to October, from 14.30 until sunset.

THE PALAZZO TORNIELLI
The palazzo stands at the centre of the ancient village destroyed in 1625, and boasts a neoclassical facade. Built by the Count Celestino Tornielli in 1834, it was finished by his son Giovanni. The interior is dominated by a spectacular staircase with internal balconies and drawing rooms decorated with the most beautiful frescoes by Ignazio Tosi. Fascinating, too, are the wine cellars with the ancient well and the oven.

GRILLANO CASTLE
The Castle represents different historical periods and is the result of the consolidation of various edifices erected between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. A big restructuring project took place at the end of the 19th century. The castle is located in the surroundings of the town and is surrounded by a vineyard. It accommodates a farm in operation since the 1930s.
